Cocktails and Convos

This past weekend, I hosted a ladies-only game night with the women in my anesthesia group. While the guys in the group are great, there is a special bond that is immediately forged between women in fields that are traditionally dominated by men. Without hesitation, we look out for one another, we cover for one another when needed and we always make sure that our best interests as women are protected. So when the idea of a ladies-only game night was posed, I was more than excited to host.

Not only do I love hosting and entertaining, but I also love to take advantage of any opportunity to put on a dress and buy fresh flowers for the table! Unfortunately, an expert chef I am not, so I immediately decreed that a cocktails and hor d’oeuvre selection was the most appropriate menu for a 3pm Sunday gathering. Luckily, my fellow Mavens obliged and we each picked a menu item to bring.

I woke up Sunday morning, excited for the day ahead. I spiffed up my place and ran some last minute errands. By 3:15p, all of the ladies had already arrived and the cocktails were flowing shortly after. The convos that followed ranged from life updates, to the crazy tales of the ORs, to “the guys” and of course the usual gossip. There was no shortage of laughter and the range of personalities molded together seamlessly. It was just so comforting to know that in a profession where one can at times feel very alone in the work space, there is a solid support system that is just a text message, phone call or operating room away.

This was not my first ladies only coworker gathering. While still in New York, I hosted a jewelry trunk show for the ladies in the hospital. It was so nice to come together, nurse and doctor hats removed for the time being and replaced with sister, friend and Maven hats instead. So in preparation for the next time you feel like getting your fellow Mavens together outside of work for tasty cocktails and great convo, here are a few recipes to help kickstart your menu.
